About The Artist and The Water Lily Designs
An introduction to Indian Folk Art as part of my teacher training program opened the door for me into a new form of art I could teach children without the pressure of realism.
After moving to the US in 2013, I became a stay at home mum to our two children. One morning our then three year old daughter said she wanted to be 'just like mummy' and 'stay at home, look after the kids and paint!'. This triggered a need in me to become the role model she really needed and having already have explored a few options with Covid delaying plans, I felt a sense of urgency and immediately moved on to opening my own studio 'The Water Lily Designs'.Inspired by various folk art styles from India, I started with Madhubani art before transitioning into ‘Lippan’ the clay and mirror mosaics that have become very popular. I now sell ready art pieces, accept custom requests and conduct workshops for adults and children, introducing them to various folk art styles from India and around the world!

What is Lippan art?
Originally from Kutch, on the west coast of India, this art style is found on the walls of homes. Clay is made with materials found in the environment and the exterior and interior walls of homes are decorated with these designs and mirrors. I work on wood bases which are first painted, then measured for design and symmetry. Clay is moulded, designed and stuck and then the piece is embellished with cut mirrors.
